Preventing Fires & Coping with Haze
Prevent fires
- Do not clear land by burning. It is prohibited and punishable by law.
- Do not drop cigarette butts or leave campfires in dry areas and peatland.
- Burning peat can smoulder underground for days and is hard to put out.
During haze
- Watch the ISPU category. From "Unhealthy", limit outdoor activities.
- Wear an N95/KF94 mask; cloth and surgical masks filter PM2.5 poorly.
- Close doors and windows; protect babies, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with asthma or respiratory illness.
- Drink plenty of water and see a health worker right away if you are short of breath.
See a fire? Report it
- Contact the local BPBD, fire brigade, or Manggala Agni.
- Give the location as precisely as possible (coordinates/landmark) and the estimated size of the fire.
- Do not try to put out a large fire yourself; stay upwind and away from smoke.
Hotspots are surface-temperature anomalies detected by satellite and are not necessarily fires.
