An emergency go-bag helps a family get through the first 72 hours after a disaster, when help may not have arrived yet.

Disasters can strike without warning. An emergency go-bag holds the basics you need to get through at least 72 hours when you have to evacuate suddenly. Keep it somewhere easy to reach, such as near the exit.

What goes in the go-bag

  • Important documents (ID card, family card, certificates, diplomas, land titles, insurance policies) in waterproof plastic; keep digital copies too
  • Drinking water and long-life food (biscuits, canned food with an opener)
  • Personal medicines and a first-aid kit
  • A torch, spare batteries, a power bank, and a small radio
  • A change of clothes, a thin blanket, a raincoat
  • Masks, hygiene items, sanitary pads, nappies if you have a baby
  • A whistle to signal if you are trapped
  • Some cash and a list of important phone numbers

Family plan

  • Agree on meeting points inside and outside your neighbourhood
  • Make sure every family member knows the nearest evacuation route
  • Check the bag every 6 months: replace expired food, medicine, and batteries

Save the numbers of the local BPBD, fire brigade, ambulance, and health centre on every family member's phone.
