Climate outlook

El Niño and a positive IOD are occurring together. Both suppress rain-cloud formation over Indonesia, so rainfall tends to be below normal, the dry season lasts longer, and the rainy season may start late. The risk of drought, clean-water shortages, and forest and land fires rises, especially in southern Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and southern Papua.

Coping with a long dry season

Save and store water

  • Store clean water in closed containers; use it first for drinking and cooking.
  • Fix leaking taps and pipes; reuse vegetable-washing water for plants.
  • Need clean-water assistance? Contact the local BPBD or village office.

Stay healthy

  • Drink enough water and avoid heavy work under the midday sun.
  • Boil water until it bubbles; unclean water causes diarrhoea.
  • Protect babies, the elderly, and livestock from dehydration.

Farming and fires

  • Match planting to BMKG seasonal forecasts and choose drought-tolerant varieties.
  • Dry land burns easily: do not burn rubbish or clear land with fire. Monitor forest-fire hotspots.
