Know the signs and stay safe

Early signs of a landslide

  • New cracks appear in the ground, walls, or floors and widen after rain.
  • Trees, power poles, or fences tilt; doors and windows suddenly stick.
  • New springs appear, or well water and slope seepage suddenly turn muddy.
  • You hear rumbling or gravel falling from a slope.

During hours of heavy rain

  • If you live on a slope or below a cliff, move temporarily to a safer place.
  • Stay away from river valleys at the foot of hills: a landslide can dam a river that then bursts as a flash flood.
  • Avoid roads along steep slopes during and just after heavy rain.

Reduce the risk

  • Do not cut slopes vertically or build ponds and rice fields above steep slopes.
  • Plant deep-rooted trees and build drains so rainwater does not soak into the slope.
  • Report new cracks to the village office or BPBD; contact BPBD or local officials immediately if a landslide occurs.

What the potential levels mean

HighLandslides can occur when rainfall is above normal; old landslides can reactivate
ModerateLandslides can occur, especially in river valleys, road cuts, or disturbed slopes
LowLandslides are rare except on disturbed slopes
Very lowLandslides generally do not occur

How it is calculated. Potential high: high hazard zone (at least 30% of the area) with rain ≥ 50 mm per day in the next 3 days or ≥ 100 mm over the last 3 days. Potential moderate: moderate or higher hazard zone with rain ≥ 20 mm per day or ≥ 50 mm over 3 days.
